Construction Process

Getting started

There’s an exciting sense of “making the leap” that comes when ground is first broken on the job site. At this point, all the planning and preparation begins to feel real.

  1. Excavation and utilities

  2. Foundation

  3. Backfill and grading

  4. Exterior concrete

Creating form

During these steps, the home leaps into being: with walls, roof, and floor, a sense comes of how the building will feel when it is complete. You begin to feel the proportions and size, and it transforms from lines on paper to a real thing.

5. Framing

6. Window setting

7. Exterior cladding

8. Soffit and fascia

Installing the guts

These steps often happen concurrently with exterior finishes. The “subs” get the home ready for drywall to be hung. The quality of work and components installed now determines, in large part, the future performance of the home.

9. Mechanical rough-ins

Plumbing, HVAC, and electrical

10. Insulation

11. Check in with lender

Ensure your bank has all the paperwork they need

Making rooms

Like framing, drywall completely changes the feel of the home. After these steps, the framed walls that seemed to blur together become distinctly separated into rooms.

12. Drywall hanging

13. Taping and texturing

14. Painting

Finishing it out

The interior finishes breathe life into the home with their color, patterns, and texture. After these steps, the home is functional, and for the first time, you get the feeling of how you will use your house—flicking the light switches, running the faucets, or opening a cupboard door.

15. Flooring and tile

16. Millwork

17. Cabinetry and countertops

18. Mechanical trim out

HVAC, plumbing, and electrical

19. Final grading and landscaping

Turning over the keys

These steps represent the culmination of your efforts! The StoneMill team will show you around the place. They’ll explain any special functions of fixtures and hardware. Come prepared with questions and concerns for them to answer.

20. Orientation

21. Punch list items and final preparation

22. Moving in
